CHFL: Daylesford Bulldogs show grit

27 Apr, 2010 12:42 PM
TRYING conditions, the Daylesford Bulldogs have recorded back-to-back victories, sneaking past Dunnstown in wet and windy conditions by 11 points.

In a low-scoring game, the Bulldogs finally broke clear of their opponents through the third quarter to reach a handy two-goal buffer, which would be enough for them to see out the game.

Daylesford's on-ball brigade in Scott Winduss, Cade O'Brien and Joel Adams shone in the poor conditions, with their hardened and experienced bodies proving too much for their Dunnstown opponents around the all important stoppages.

The rain tumbled down as both teams ran out, persisting for the majority of the match and Daylesford's start in the wet conditions left a lot to be desired.

A goalless opening term for the Bulldogs had them in trouble early, with Dunnstown taking a 15-point lead into the first break, a handy lead in the sloppy conditions.

Daylesford players regrouped with an outstanding second quarter where they held their opponents to just one behind and, when Luke Adams goaled from directly in front, the Bulldogs reclaimed the lead and took a five-point lead into the main change.

The third quarter was one of the toughest and closest battles Daylesford has seen for some time, with both teams' desperation and courage really on the line as all players tried to gain any distance they possibly could as the football began to resemble a watermelon.

Daylesford managed one goal for the term, but it was enough to extend their lead, thanks to incredible defensive pressure from both Peter Jenkin and Jordan Alexander, who both revelled in the wet conditions.

The stage was set for a frantic final term, and when Dunnstown brought the margin back to five points, it was game on.

However, Daylesford tall Jack Savige stood up when it counted, delivering the final nail in the coffin after kicking what would be the final goal of the day.

Reserves

The Daylesford reserves recorded a historic win over their opponents Dunnstown over the weekend, getting up by 37 points.

Dunnstown had soundly beaten the Bulldogs over previous occasions, but the Bulldogs with an almost full strength side never gave in, even after a brief spurt of goals from Dunnstown.

What was a close contest during the third quarter soon blew out, after forwards Nick Cronin and Vincent Townsend controlled the third quarter to help build a handy margin which got built on in the final quarter.

Jack Nulty also continued his fine early season form, becoming the important link up man through half-back but also being very tight defensively as well. Dan Conduit also proved he has been an astute pick up by the club, booting three goals for the Bulldogs.

Daylesford now face Springbank who sit second on the ladder which will be a huge test for the improving Bulldogs.
