Adams shocked with best and fairest award

06 Sep, 2006 01:45 PM
DAYLESFORD Football and Netball Club players have taken top honours in the Central Highlands Football League presentation night last week.

Daylesford senior player and coach Luke Adams won the Geoff Taylor Medal for the best and fairest player.

In the club's first year in the Bendigo Bank CHFL season, he won with 29 votes, including seven three-vote best-on-ground performances in the 17 rounds.

Adams was five votes clear of Clunes coach Glenn Handley on 24 votes while Waubra player Danny Liston polled third.

Adams, 30, said he was honoured to win the medal.

"It was quite a shock," he said.

He said his favourite games of the season were against Hepburn and Learmonth.

It was Daylesford's night of nights with under-15 player Jordan Alexander also winning the best and fairest, while under-17 netballer Emma Callahan was runner-up.

Alexander won with 42 votes, five clear of second place.

He said he was pretty happy with his performance.

"I played well against Hepburn and Dunnstown," he said. "I like everything about football and hope to eventually captain or play AFL."

Despite only winning one game, Callahan said she polled votes in every game on the court.

She said she enjoyed playing netball as it kept her fit.

She hopes to play reserves or seniors next season.

In the Castlemaine league, Tom Gurkin missed becoming the under 15 best and fairest by one vote.

Gurkin was on a tie, but was pipped at the last vote count.

Adams said the players' achievements were a great honour for the club.

"It's a great achievement for the club which has brought us together," he said.

"It's a great start for us in the CHFL."
