Program back due to support

30 Jan, 2008 10:15 AM
THE Daylesford Riding for the Disabled program is back.

The program, which provides riding instruction for people with disabilities, was in recess during 2007.

But due to public support and a demand for its services a new committee has formed and the program will re-

commence this year.

A public meeting at Daylesford Community Health Centre in December confirmed the program's re-introduction.

Secretary Lesley Hewitt said the return of the club would benefit the region's disabled youth.

"It means the participants can continue to learn the skills of riding. They missed it last year," Mrs Hewitt said.

Mrs Hewitt said Boomerang Ranch will again host the centre, as it did in its inception in 1992.

"We are starting in February with just four participants, but we expect that number grow over the year as more

volunteers and trainers are found," she said.

Events coordinator Joanne Silcock said the 2008 RDA year was likely to be successful despite the hardship of 2007.

"Everyone who attended the meeting was very positive about the centre re-commencing," Ms Silcock said.

"Although the equine influenza outbreak has meant that all RDAV programs have been on hold since August, it

is hoped that with continuing good news on its containment, all RDAV programs will recommence in term one 2008."

The centre's 2008 president is Wendy Hodgben, vice-president is Peter Francis and treasurer is Chris Clare. Steve

Clare will be riding coach.

Riding sessions will be run at Boomerang Ranch in Daylesford every Friday afternoon, during school terms one,

two and four. There will be no riding over term three due to the winter weather.

The next meeting is scheduled for February 6 at 6.30pm at the Daylesford Community Health Centre.
