Newlyn in outright win over Hepburn

NEWLYN won this year's grand final by defeating Hepburn outright.

Hepburn won the toss and batted and was dismissed for 145 runs in 69 overs.

Wayne Robinson top-scored with 55 with support from Gabe Henderson, 16 not out.

Simon Dwyer 3/42 off 20 overs, Brad Winzar 2/29 off 14 and Ian Hill 2/2 off four took the wickets.

Newlyn had a hit and was 4/66 at stumps after 24 overs.

On Sunday Newlyn resumed and passed Hepburn's score and was dismissed for 161 runs.

Mark Clohesy top-scored with 59 runs, Nick Smith assisted with 14 and Brad Winzar also hit 14.

Wayne Robinson took 5/43 off 13 overs and Gabe Henderson chipped in with 3/28 off 12 overs.

With a minimum 69 overs to be bowled Hepburn had a second innings but it was soon bundled out for 78 - only Sam Winnard offered resistance with 23 runs.

Newlyn's bowlers were on top with Mark Clohesy 4/23 off five, Chris Stephens 3/34 off 10 and Simon Dwyer 2/15 off six all doing the damage.

Newlyn needed 63 runs for an outright victory and achieved this by 4.30pm.

They were 2/65 with Nick Smith, 25 no, and Ash Davidson, 16 no, there at the end.

The HP Dwan Medal for the best player in the grand final as judged by the umpires went to Mark Clohesy of Newlyn.

The umpires were Tom Geddes and Darren Woodward.

The Presentation Night will be held on Saturday, March 28, at the Daylesford Bowling Club from 7pm.
