Hepburn premiers

26 Mar, 2008 10:29 AM
A BRILLIANT all-round performance from Sam Winnard helped Hepburn claim a surprise Daylesford and District Cricket Association premiership.

Hepburn beat ladder leaders Korweinguboora by 80 runs in the grand final at Victoria Park over the weekend.

The grand final brought its annual nail-biting pressure and the match was a low-scoring affair.

On Saturday, Hepburn won the toss and batted.

The Burras were soon in trouble after losing both openers cheaply.

But a key partnership between youngster Winnard, 74, and Wayne Robinson, 40, steadied the ship for the underdogs.

Glen Malone, 20, and Gabe Henderson, 22, also chipped in with the bat as Hepburn reached 177.

Korweinguboora's Chris Adams bowled superbly and finished with 6-35.

Luke Adams, 3-59, and Josh Adams, 1-27, were also amongst the wicket takers. Steve Cowan took five catches for the runners-up.

The run-chase was well within reach for Korweinguboora, which pounded opposition bowling attacks throughout the summer.

But the closing session was a disaster for Korweinguboora.

The normally reliable batting line-up was 6-86 at the end of the first day's play and had a mountain of work to do to salvage a win.

Easter Sunday, like Saturday, belonged to the Hepburn bowlers, particularly Winnard, as wickets were steadily mown down. Korweinguboora was dismissed for its lowest score of the year, 97.

Captain Cade O'Brien, 24, and teenager Josh Cowan, 28, top-scored.

But it was Hepburn and Winnard's day.

The young Burra backed up his run-feast by snaring 5-41 with the ball.

Wayne Robinson ensured Korweinguboora's batsmen didn't build partnerships, claiming 4-26. James Winnard picked the other wicket to finish with 1-5.

The 2007/08 premiership follows Hepburn's heartbreaking four-run grand final loss against Newlyn last year.

Hepburn's ineffectual second innings finished at 3-177 when play was stopped early.

Robinson, 85 not out, guaranteed the game wouldn't be forced into a second innings decider. James Winnard conjured 28.

Chris Adams, 2-32, and Luke Adams with, 1-9, took wickets for Korweinguboora.

Sam Winnard won the player of the match award, The HP Dwan Medal.

The umpires were Finley MacDonald and Steve O'Brien.

A presentation night will be held at Daylesford Bowling Club on Saturday. Richmond Football Club legend Tommy Hafey will be guest speaker. The event starts at 7pm.
