THE Cricket Willow Cup final - the Central Highlands Region Twenty-20 Competition - was played at the superb facilities at Cricket Willow in front of a large Australia Day crowd, with Wendouree Cricket Club from the Ballarat Cricket Association winning comfortably from Colts Phelans.
As Australia Day and a grand final, both teams lined up for the national anthem prior to the match commencing.
Colts Phelans CC (from the Maryborough & District Cricket Association) won the toss and elected to bat, but were soon in trouble with early wickets and struggled to reach 100 as a total.
Contributors were: Dean Walker: 29, Dave Foolde 17, Dane Baker: 13.
Wendouree Bowlers were strong with David Ellis taking 3-10, Tim Miller 2-17 (also took three catches) and Rhys Cahir 2-28.
Colts batsmen struggled to find the middle and, more importantly, the boundaries as David Ellis and Tim Miller held down the runs with tight line and length.
Colts were bowled out for 100 giving Wendouree a small total of 101 to win.
Wendouree started strong from ball one having a very strong batting line up. Opener Sam Miller batted superbly, making 108 in an innings, which showed class and strength in many boundaries and the few sixes that he hit with the pink ball. This followed up Miller's 100 in the semi-
final of the competition.
Other strong contributors were Matt Turner 43 and Heath Pyke 47.
Colts outstanding bowlers were Kane Shepherd 2-42 and Richie Clarke 2-24.
Colt's bowlers often bowled too straight and down leg-side, which gave Wendouree several extras and more opportunities to score boundaries.
Wendouree got the total of 101 in the 10th over, however Colts decided that Wendouree deserved to be allowed to play the full 20 overs and give the 150 strong crowd the opportunity to see excellent cricket played.
Man of the match was an obvious choice in Sam Miller (108).
The match was played in high spirit and good sportsmanship, and the Cricket Willow venue proved to be an excellent venue for the day's cricket.
Prior to the final a Family 6's round robin competition was held that included eight teams of six members involving sons, daughters fathers and mothers.
This event proved to be an enjoyable opportunity for all involved to have a fun hit of cricket on Australia Day and then stay to watch the grand final.
