Cricket Willow Twenty20 a real slog

20 Jan, 2009 10:16 AM
THE excitement is building for the final of the Cricket Willow Twenty20 Cup on Australia Day.

Clubs representing seven associations from across the Central Highlands have slogged it out in the qualifying finals of the competition during January.

The semifinal winners, Colts Phelans (Maryborough Cricket Association) and Wendouree (Ballarat Cricket Association), will now progress to the grand final to be played at Cricket Willow on Australia Day, Monday, January 26.

Twenty20 cricket has taken Australia by storm and the Cricket Willow Twenty20 Cup provides a great opportunity for the local cricket community to get a taste of the action.

As the name suggests, each side bats for an action-packed innings of 20 overs.

Other features include "free hits'' for front-foot no-balls, overs bowled in "five over blocks'' from each end, incoming batsmen having only 90 seconds to face up to a ball, and a "bowl off'' to decide tied or weather-interrupted games.

The Australia Day festivities will kick off with Family Super 6s cricket, 10am to 1pm.

Families and friends are invited to form a team of six players to participate in an exciting new form of cricket played with a "softaball''.

The Cricket Willow Twenty20 Cup grand final will get underway at 2pm.

Entry to the day's events is by gold coin donation, with proceeds going to Camp Quality.

The winner of the Cricket Willow Twenty20 Cup will receive a $1000 voucher for Jabaroo cricket equipment, courtesy of Cricket Willow.
