Cricket Willow Shield grand final

ON Sunday, January 22 four clubs travelled to Cricket Willow hoping to win the grand final of the 2011/12 Cricket Willow Cup and Cricket Willow Shield.

In the Division 2 Cricket Willow Shield, Lucas Cricket Club from the Ballarat and District Cricket Association took on Youth Club Cricket Club from the Grampians Cricket Association.

Youth Club won the toss and elected to bat.

After a solid start from openers AJ Chavan, 22 and Matt Delzotto, 27, the score reached 0-48.

After the wicket of Delzotto a steady flow of wickets fell for the rest of the innings, which finished with Youth Club bowled out for 72.

Man of the match Kane Wilson finished with figures of 4-6 and Simon Hucker finished with 1-8.

Chasing 72 for victory, Lucas took a cautious approach only loosing two wickets on its way to making the required 72.

Opener Paul Jones, 23 no and Mark Gittins, 26 helped make the required target with overs to spare.

For Youth Club, Steve Legassick claimed 1 for 14.

In the Division 1 Cricket Willow Cup, Wendouree took on North Castlemaine, which promised to be an exciting clash.

After a steady flow of wickets, Wendouree was 8-121 with two overs to go. Man of the match David Ellis smashed his way to an unbeaten 52 including five 6s at the end of the innings. With with the help of Liam Brady, 38, he guided his side to an imposing 170.

After such a promising start with the ball, North Castlemaine finished off poorly and was chasing 171 for victory.

Needing a strong start to its innings, North Castlemaine took a cautious approach and tried the tactic of keeping wickets in hand for a slog at the end.

Jamie Allan started the team off well with a handy 28 North Castlemaine was unable to stick to the required run rate, which was always rising.

North Castlemaine was eventually dismissed for 112 with Matt Jackson, 38, top scoring and Jamie Allan, 28, the main contributors.

For Wendouree ,Tim Beacham finished with four wickets and David Ellis three.
