A DAYLESFORD basketball player has an opportunity to join the nation's elite when she plays with the Ballarat Miners under-14 girls team in the Australian championships in September.
Lydia Edwards said the team reached the championships through its placement on the ladder in the Victorian Junior Basketball League competition.
"We're happy about it," Edwards said. "It's the highest we can go for our age group."
Edwards said the team would be competing against 28 teams for a place as the best under-14 girls team in Australia.
It's the first time in 19 years that Ballarat has been represented by an under-14 girls team in the national championships since it started in 1981.
Edwards said the team was focused on the tournament with three days training and two days playing in competitions across Victoria every week.
It was her fourth consecutive year of playing with the Ballarat Miners after playing competition basketball in Daylesford and Ballarat since she was six years old she said.
The 10-member team was hoping to raise funds so it could travel to Perth for the championships, she said.
"It's going to cost a minimum of $13,000 including accommodation and transport for the team and two coaches," she said.
There will be a screening of Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince
at the Ballarat Regent Theatre this month to help raise money for the team.
