NEWLYN'S Jared Tallent became just the third Australian to win a medal at the IAAF World Race Walking Cup with third in the men's 50km on May 15 in Chihuahua, Mexico.
Tallent braved hot, windy weather and persistent stomach trouble to cross the line in 3:54.55hr and claim his first podium finish in four appearances at the worldwide meet.
He joined Simon Baker (gold in the 50km in 1989 and silver in 1991) and Nathan Deakes (bronze in the 20km in 2004) as the only Australian men to win medals in the World Race Walking Cup.
"It was definitely a tough day at the office. Not everything went my way so I was happy just to finish in the end and still get a medal," Tallent, a dual Olympic medallist, said.
"After about 15km I was having trouble keeping my fluid down. I got to the 27km-mark and started to throw up and then at 30km I stopped right in front of the grandstand and just puked like I did in Beijing.
"I felt better once I did that and put on a few good laps but I was trying to drink and it just wasn't going down.
"So effectively I walked the last 20km without having a drink which made it tough, especially with the weather."
Slovakia's Matej Toth won gold in 3:53:30 and local favourite Horacio Nava was second.
Chris Erickson was the best of the other Australians in 15th place after holding down 10th spot for much of the race.
