DESPITE the rain, hail and the thunder more than 500 people spilled into the Daylesford Arc to watch the Libertines smash their way to victory over the Gold Diggers at the Derby Inferno on Saturday afternoon, as part of the 2010 ChillOut festival.
The official scores were Libertines 189 to the Gold Diggers' 165.
The crowd was loud, colourful and supportive, enjoying the many thrills and spills of the bout, including a five-skater pile-up in the first half.
Many spectators brought banners to support their favourite players.
In collaboration with both the Geelong and Victorian Roller Derby leagues, the Derby Inferno was anticipated to be the biggest regional derby event for the year and by all accounts it can be claimed as a huge success for the Ballarat league.
VRDL guest skater Candy Rocks hurt her shoulder resulting in a trip to the emergency room, while lesser injuries included a suspected dislocated jaw and a smattering of rink rash all round.
YMCA Ballarat and the Daylesford ARC got behind the event by allowing BRDL use of their facilities for the event.
Roller derby, a spectacular full-contact sport played on roller skates, found a place in Ballarat last November, when the league hosted its first Derbytante Brawl.
The Gold Diggers took the title.
Saturday's event, the league's second ever public bout, saw the Libertines take revenge on their rivals.
