AFTER months of work Smeaton Primary School students have screened their documentary films, which they put together as part of The Arts Centre's DocU Project.
Smeaton was one of four schools in Victoria chosen to participate in the project, which allows students in regional schools to create and devise their own documentaries.
Experts from the SoundHouse at The Arts Centre have visited the school over recent months and last week again visited to help pupils put the finishing touches to their films.
SoundHouse educator Amy Bennett said the students were very enthusiastic about the project.
"It's fantastic. It gives them a chance to put into practice skills that usually only adults get to use," she said.
Twelve students from grades three to five at the school participated and have created four documentaries that will tie in with the school's 150th reunion next year.
Ms Bennett said one of the most rewarding aspects of the project had been the kids' interaction with some of the older community members during the interview process.
"The kids did all the work themselves," Ms Bennett said.
"They rang up the people they wanted to interview, they set up the equipment and they did the interviews."
Last week the pupils took the footage and put it together with music.
Two of the documentaries will be screened at the Geelong Performing Arts Centre, on December 4 with films by other schools in the project.
The documentaries will also screen at a school concert on December 11.
