BARRY Goldsmith has had his guts ripped out.
After weeks of summer voluntary work constructing a cricket pitch at the Clunes football ground, the Clunes resident recently found out it had been removed.
"It took me six weeks to construct it, single handedly with no help from any others," Mr Goldsmith said.
"It rips your guts out."
The pitch cost close to $7000 to construct, with funds provided from the shire and Cricket Victoria and the project overseen by Hepburn Shire Council.
Mr Goldsmith got a note from residents that the pitch had been removed, but initially he couldn't believe it.
"I don't know what the reasoning was. All the plans were supplied by a top construction firm in Ballarat," he said.
"I won't be doing anymore volunteer work around here, I can tell you that."
But Clunes Football Club assistant general manager Jason Yole said the pitch had been constructed too high and its removal was for the safety of the football players.
"The reason it was ripped out was to level the oval and remove the big hump where the cricket pitch was," he said.
Hepburn Shire CEO Kaylene Conrick confirmed the Clunes Football Club and the Cricket Club had been working together to address a safety issue on the ground relating to concrete edges around the cricket pitch becoming exposed.
"The clubs have kept council informed of the work which has seen the temporary removal of the pitch and they are continuing to work together to coordinate the relaying of a new pitch," she said.
Mr Yole said the cricket club had no problem removing it given that they were looking to move to the primary school for the B grade while the A grade would utilise the turf wicket on the Clunes football ground.
