NEWLYN Primary School has created a frog-friendly environment to attract frogs to breed in a new pond in the school grounds.
"The school received a Coles Junior Landcare grant of $1100 to help with pond construction and school councillor Richard Bell, from Bells Watergardens, provided advice," teacher Linda Lay said.
"Mr Bell and school council president Craig Slater both donated their time and expertise, working with the students and teachers to build the pond, which utilises the run-off from a large rainwater tank.
"The pond will be topped up from the tank over the dry summer months to ensure a year-round water supply."
Ms Lay said the junior children had been busy planting frog-friendly plants to provide shade and shelter around the area with further landscaping planned to make the area as attractive to frogs as possible.
The school already has a vegetable garden that provides produce for class cooking activities - and surplus vegetables for children to take home.
