Musk's train whistle's blowing

24 Aug, 2010 12:36 PM
FOR the first time since the February 2009 bushfires, the train will return to Musk.

A celebration will be held on Sunday to mark the maiden voyage of the the Daylesford to Musk train, which has been inoperable since the track was destroyed in the Musk Vale fire.

Daylesford Spa Country Railway marketing manager Bronwyn Liddelow said the loss of the track in the bushfires had been a significant loss for the community, as well as a financial blow to DSCR.

"I think it will certainly help people move on from the fires,'' she said.

"This chapter is finally closed.

"We've been suffering greatly not being able to operate as far. So far we've lost 50 per cent of our revenue.''

Daylesford Spa County Railway received $300,000 in Bushfire Recovery funding last February to repair the damage suffered in the Musk Vale fire.

Ms Liddelow said 1.6km of track and 2000 sleepers had now been replaced.

"It was a very large project in terms of funding,'' she said.

"We had to replace a lot of the rail. It was bent in the fire due to the intensity of it.''

The train, a tourist drawcard providing a scenic ride between Daylesford and Musk, will operate weekly on Sundays and on the first Saturday of each month.

Residents can book a place on the free maiden voyage, which departs from Daylesford station at 11am this Sunday.

There will be a ceremonial releasing of the signal that will allow the train to proceed into the platform at Musk.

To book, call Bronwyn Liddelow on 0422 076 272 or email marketing@dscr.com.au
