Daylesford Primary School's kitchen garden relaunches with a fundraiser

31 Aug, 2010 12:41 PM
A FUNDRAISING dinner dance for the Daylesford Primary School's kitchen garden project will also serve as a community and school celebration.

Daylesford Primary's kitchen garden program has been on hold since the beginning of this year, because of building works taking place at the school as part of the federal government's Building the Education Revolution project .

Principal Peter Burke said with building works scheduled to be completed by the end of the year, the school was preparing to relaunch its kitchen garden program, which would be bigger and better than ever.

"Not only is this a fundraiser but it's a chance for our school and community to say our kitchen garden is alive and well," Mr Burke said.

Due to space restrictions in the school canteen, where the cooking component of the school's curriculum has previously been run, the kitchen garden program was only offered to grades three and four.

Mr Burke said the new building would include a five-station kitchen, and it was big enough to open the program to the whole school.

"The half program that we ran was incredibly successful and very positive," Mr Burke said.

"It became the students' favourite party of the week.

"They were taking the recipes home and cooking at home.

"To have that sort of flow-on effect was very exciting and that was just our half program."

A fundraising dance on September 16 will raise money to help equip the new kitchen.

Starting at 7pm at Daylesford Town Hall, the event will include dinner by The Perfect Drop, Eco Catering, Beer and Breakfast and Spade to Blade sourced from local produce.

Bettina Ralph of Special Touch Wedding and Event Services is arranging the event.

Stacy and Steve of Family Farm and Shane Biggs (bass) and Lawrence Nulty (drums) will entertain with bluegrass, bossa nova, swing jazz and '60s classic rock.

Tickets are $50 per person or $40 per person for a table of eight or more.

They are sale now at Daylesford Primary School office and at Benjamin Bandicoot Gifts and Tonna Fruit and Vegetables.
