Vote on shire boundaries

13 Mar, 2007 10:59 AM
SOUTH Bullarto residents will vote on whether they want to live in the Hepburn or Moorabool shire in the coming weeks.

A public meeting, held on February 15 at the Bullarto Hall, discussed the future of the small pocket of land in South Bullarto.

About 15 people, Moorabool Shire councillor Pat Toohey and Hepburn Shire councillor Heather Mutimer attended the second meeting to discuss the issue.

At the meeting, it was decided that a 75 per cent vote in favour of the proposal would see the Hepburn Shire's boundaries extend to include an extra 13 properties, following ministerial approval.

Cr Mutimer said the issue wasn't being treated lightly because it had been around for years.

"If the minister does decide, he will do it carefully," she said.

Following requests at a meeting 12 months ago, the residents received a package containing information on rating and valuation comparisons, planning and zoning comparisons, community and health services, road maintenance,

roadside management, weed control, private forestry and logging issues.

Cr Toohey said South Bullarto residents would have in the future the opportunity to choose the shire they would be most happy to live in.

He said there would be no rezoning involved in the final decision except for a "geographical alignment".

"There will be no win or loss to either shire," he said.

"It's a follow-up on something that has been a community issue since amalgamation."

Cr Toohey said residents had to vote within 30 days of receiving the voting papers.
