A TRIP to Melbourne has people digging deeper in their pockets since the Daylesford Newsagency ceased operation as a V/Line agent earlier this month.
Hepburn Springs resident David Harris paid more than $10 extra to travel from Daylesford to Melbourne and back again after being unable to purchase a return ticket from other V/Line agenies.
Mr Harris said he used to buy a Daylesford to Melbourne return ticket for $10.70.
However, since the newsagency stopped selling V/Line tickets, Mr Harris had to purchase a one-way ticket to Ballan and another one to Melbourne on a recent two-day visit to the city.
He then had to purchase another ticket for the return journey with an overall cost of $20.70.
Mr Harris said he was told he could not buy a return ticket from Melbourne to Daylesford the next day because the bus driver in Daylesford did not issue Daylesford to Melbourne train tickets.
Mr Harris said he inquired why he was charged extra and was told he was travelling during peak hour, but he claimed otherwise.
"I have been travelling to Melbourne for the past four years. It has never been an issue when I bought my ticket from Little's or Les' newsagency and having it checked by the conductors ... you only paid extra if you travelled
on a Monday or Friday," he said.
The Daylesford Newsagency stopped selling tickets after V/Line denied requests for a ticket machine and V/Net computer.
Mr Harris said perhaps the council should take up the issue.
"If V/Line are having a problem of where to locate the V/Net computer, why not ask the council," he said.
"It is their responsibility to look after the local population, to which a large percentage are rate payers."
A spokesperson from the Hepburn Shire Council said council had not been approached to become an agent.
"Ideally a provider is one that can offer ticket sales on weekends as well as early hours on weekdays. The council could not offer this."
A V/Line spokesperson said they were working as hard as possible to find another agent in Daylesford.
People are advised to buy tickets through V/Line and call 136 196 or go to www.vline.com.au
