Victory for Daylesford sports community

23 Mar, 2010 10:15 AM
THE Daylesford sports community has welcomed a decision by the council to commit $4000 towards a new sport and recreation facility proposed for Victoria Park.

President of Daylesford Football Netball Club John Goullet said the decision was a "wonderful victory for the sports fraternity of Daylesford".

"The existing premises should be condemned. The place is falling down," he said.

At last week's ordinary council meeting, councillors voted 4-3 to commit $4000 for a quality surveyor for the project. (For: May, McClenaghan, Klein, Henderson; against: Barrell, Booth, Hayes).

While the Vic Park Association had prepared a feasibility study and concept plans for the project, detailed plans and quality surveyor estimates would be required to progress the project to an application-ready stage.

But there was division between councillors when the issue was debated last Tuesday.

Birch Ward councillor Jonathan Barrell said the project did not form part of the council plan.

Cameron Ward councillor Tim Hayes said he was yet to be convinced that the project was financially viable on an operational basis.

He said councillors were also being asked to forget about what their existing priorities were.

"Let's jump the gun, let's jump the fence," he said.

In support of the motion, Holcombe Ward councillor Bill McClenaghan said with State and Federal government elections imminent, it was a golden opportunity for council to find funding for the project.

"If we're not ready because we haven't got a quantity surveyor then we'll miss out and it'll run through our fingers like sand," he said.

"Daylesford's rundown facilities have long passed their used by date."

Members of the community formed the Vic Park Association to secure a multipurpose facility for Daylesford and say they are confident government and philanthropic funding can be achieved.

Vic Park Association member Allan McLeod said it was disappointing some of the councillors could not see the positive outcomes for the community.

"The decision allows us to seek funding in an election year," he said.
