Victorian Senate seat for Hepburn Springs blacksmith John Madigan

Victorian Senate seat for Hepburn Springs blacksmith John Madigan

24 Aug, 2010 12:39 PM

HEPBURN Springs blacksmith John Madigan has won the sixth Senate seat in Victoria.

DLP candidate Madigan won the seat after count 25 saw the current Liberal/Nationals party senator Julian McGauran excluded.

And, in the House of Representatives, Catherine King has been re-elected as the federal member for Ballarat.

Mr Madigan has at times been a vocal member of the Hepburn Shire community.

As Hepburn Moorabool Mt Alexander Goldfields Superpipe landholder group secretary in 2007, he campaigned to raise awareness of farmers' concerns about the Goldfields Superpipe.

In 2008 he held a coffin emblazoned with the words "The Mayors Coffin of Community Concerns" upright throughout a 90-minute council meeting, in protest of council's "burying" of workplace bullying allegations.

For Catherine King, Saturday's victory has resulted in a fourth federal term. Ms King first won the seat from the Liberal Party in 2001.

She scored more than 40,000 first-preference votes with a positive swing of 1.93 per cent.

"I am humbled to have been returned as the member for Ballarat and that people have once again put their trust in me to represent them," Ms King said.

"This district is a great place to live, to work and to raise a family and I am so proud to be part of this community.

Good on yer John !!! It's great to see a down to earth bloke who speaks his mind and with the courage of his convictions get this far. Win or lose you have sent a clear message to politicians at all levels that high calibre people with quality principles are still around and capable of getting elected. You will represent the groups in our society whose voices are never heard and who get overlooked by the major parties and vote chasing spin-meisters who gravitate to the money and the top end of town. You are not afraid of hard work and commitment and your novel ways of making political statements to the Hepburn Shire Council should have Canberra abuzz with refreshing good humour amidst the drab and dreary shadows of Australian political life today. How about the Prime Minister's coffin of national concerns or a surprise visit from "Ned Kelly" if he could get that helmet past parliamentary security? Local working families will be absolutely chuffed with you in the big house to represent them whilst those of high self importance are still chafing from their dealings with you. Well done J. J. and remember that politicians are like nappies that need changing often & for the same reason

John Madigan was, for years, a very active member of the Central Highlands Tourist Railway, which runs out of Daylesford. He was instrumental in getting the locomotives transported to Daylesford. Without the work of John Madigan ( senator elect) and his father ( now deceased) the Central Highlands Tourist Railway would probably not be operational today.
