Vandals hit club

23 Jan, 2008 10:03 AM
CLUNES Bowling Club's greens have been vandalised in the latest blow in a bitter dispute over the poisoning of hundreds of trees in the area.

President Alan Baird said a call had been made to the club greenskeeper at 9am Monday after a resident noticed sump oil had been used to write an obscenity across one green.

Mr Baird said the vandalism was "disgraceful" and there had been a "vendetta" against the club since the legal poisoning of poplars and elms along Creswick Creek late last year.

Mr Baird said although members had tried to soak up the oil with kitty litter the damage would take at least until next season to repair.

"We had all our tournaments coming up, an Australia Day competition . . . and we had hoped to host some of the finals here," he said.

Mr Baird said he couldn't put a price on the damage.

"The work is done by volunteers - they spend hours every day here."
