Truck depot won't wash in Creswick

15 Dec, 2009 10:40 AM
CRESWICK residents say a proposed truck wash that would operate just metres from houses must not get the green light from the council.

The proposed facility at Anne St, Creswick, would include a truck wash and storage depot, which would be used to repair and maintain trucks and house stock trailers.

Creswick resident Geoff Phillips said none of the residents wanted semi-trailers "roaring up the road in front of them".

"The smell, the traffic issues, there's going to be a huge disturbance in the area," he said.

"The road is not wide enough to take two semi-trailers coming in and out."

Mr Phillips was also worried about the safety of residents, saying the movement of semi-trailers in and out of the site could be "a threat to life".

Rhonda Merritt and her husband Terry, of Merritt Group Construction, have obtained a planning permit to build a child-care centre on land next to the proposed truck wash.

"Mix that with semi-trailers and you have a disaster," Mr Phillips said.

Ms Merritt said the whole residential environment would be affected.

Anne St is mostly residential, but the proposed truck site is zoned Industrial one.

Ms Merritt said the council should reevaluate the industrial estate of Anne St entirely.

"It's only a very small parcel of land that is industrial," she said.

"There's only one way in and one way out and that's through Anne St."

"No doubt if you spoke to anyone on the street they would be against it. A lot of people don't even know it's happening."

Mark Prendergast of Prendergast Livestock applied to the council for a permit in September.

Mr Prendergast declined to comment to The Advocate about the application.

At last Tuesday's planning meeting councillors were due to consider the project and the council staff recommendation was to approve the facility.

But after several residents voiced their objections, councillors voted to defer their decision until next year to gather more information.
