Trade booming as visitors flock to shire

16 Jan, 2007 11:22 AM
THE Hepburn Shire was revelling in a trading boom last week as thousands of people flocked to the iconic Spa Country to shop, relax and dine.

Following a quiet Christmas and New Year, Daylesford's streets were buzzing with children, families and couples young and old.

Daylesford Accommodation Booking Service director Anne Baird said bookings were exceptionally good.

"The cooler weather and the bushfires have brought a lot of people to town," she said.

"The phones are still ringing."

Ms Baird said people were coming from South Australia and Melbourne to relax and enjoy spa resorts.

She said the closure of the Hepburn Springs bathhouse had not affected visitation numbers.

"The important thing is the bathhouse has not had an impact we thought it would have," she said.

"Daylesford is the destination for pampering and relaxation."

The Mill Markets in Daylesford had more than 4200 people through its doors in the last two weeks.

Since opening three months ago, the retail outlet has averaged 300 people per day.

After keeping a head count, The Mill Markets recorded 1000 people on Sunday, January 7.

Manager Angus Carr said the The Mill Markets had been a huge success and was received well locally.

He said people were visiting on day trips and had heard about the markets through word of mouth.

"It's booming," he said. "In your wildest dreams you want this kind of success so quickly."

The Mill Markets is full with 96 stalls holders and a waiting list of 47 interested people.

Mr Carr said The Mill Markets planned to operate a bus circuit seven days a week with designated drop-off points in the shire.
