PERSISTENCE paid off for Australian Air Force Cadet Thomas Woodroofe after he was awarded RSL Air Force Cadet of the Year in Victoria.
The 17-year-old Daylesford Secondary College student received the honour at a ceremony last month from Governor of Victoria Professor David de Kretser, AC, at Melbourne's ANZAC House.
Thomas has earnt a trip to a site of RSL significance in Malaysia next April.
Thomas was also appointed the senior role of national chairman of the Cadet Reference Group.
Under the AAFC title, Thomas will regularly travel interstate and represent 6500 air force cadets and numerous committees.
"It develops interpersonal skills and personal skills, time management and self discipline," he said.
Thomas said there was a misconception that the air force was about guns and war, and flying.
"Flying is an elective," he said.
"Less than five per cent of cadets learn to fly. I intend to learn to fly."
Thomas has excelled since joining the AAFC at the minimum age of 12-and-a-half-years old.
He was appointed the youngest Cadet Under Officer in May, is the Cadet Commanding Officer for 410 Squadron Bendigo, and the Squadron Adjutant for 415 Squadron Melbourne High School.
Thomas hopes to join the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra after completing Year 12 at Melbourne High School next year.
