MEMBERS of Daylesford Table Tennis Club have been forced to delay the start of their 2010 season, after having almost all of their equipment stolen during their summer break.
Club member Eric Jarlaud said they had all been shocked by the robbery and could not believe someone would steal sporting and other equipment from a club that provided low-cost sport to the community.
People can play table tennis for less than $2 a week and many community groups use the facilities for free.
More than $1400 worth of equipment was stolen from the club house, including nets, bats and balls.
Mr Jarlaud said it would be difficult for the small club to replace all of the equipment.
"Members all pay their club fees but we don't really like taking it out of that. It's not what that money was meant for," he said. "They took all the stuff that the club needs to run."
The club has delayed competition until after the Chill Out weekend, as they will need time to replace the equipment.
According to leading senior constable Geoff Davies, the stolen equipment included a fridge containing lollies and soft drinks, a kettle, microwave oven, a table, portable stove used to heat pies, and even the rubbish bins, mops and brooms.
Several metal lockers filled with the club's balls, bats and six nets had also been removed and stolen.
Thieves gained entry to the clubhouse, located in a shed at Victoria Park, sometime between January 13 and February 3, by forcing open a door.
"They've used a vehicle as there were tread marks inside," Leading Sen Const Davies said.
"They've opened a roller door at the back and driven a vehicle in to load the equipment they took."
The thieves also broke into steel lockers owned by the Daylesford Show Society, causing $100 worth of damage.
"It would have happened overnight, possibly with a ute or a trailer," Sen Const Davies said.
"There probably would have been more than one offender to lift the equipment."
Police hope somebody will come forward with information if they are aware of any persons coming into recent possession of nets, bats and balls.
