The key to a long and happy marriage

27 Jun, 2007 04:44 PM

ZYGMUNT and Gladys Tratkiewicz were married only four months after meeting each other, but their relationship has lasted 60 years.

The couple will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary tomorrow and on Sunday with family and friends at a gathering at Daylesford Bowling Club.

Mr and Mrs Tratkiewicz moved to Australia from England in 1947 to escape the country's chilly winters.

They first met at a dance in the small English village of Avon Dassett, and were engaged and married a few months later.

Mrs Tratkiewicz said she was lucky to meet her husband.

"I didn't even want to go to the dance," she said.

Mr Tratkiewicz was born in Poland in 1915.

He spent several years in a prisoner of war camp during World War II.

Mrs Tratkiewicz said the secret to a long marriage was listening to each other and talking things over.

She said an important part missing from their wedding in 1947 would be enjoyed at Sunday's celebration.

"We didn't have a cake at our wedding, we couldn't afford it, but we definitely will on Sunday," Mrs Tratkiewicz said.
