Swan patrols resume at Lake Daylesford

29 Sep, 2009 11:15 AM
SWAN patrols have started again at Lake Daylesford.

The patrols, by Hepburn Shire Council officers, are concentrated in spring to protect the offspring of the native black swans.

There have been reports over previous years that dogs were attacking and killing the swans.

Council Compliance co-ordinator Eric Wright said Lake Daylesford was an "on-leash" area and it was unfortunate that not everyone realised the importance of this rule.

"Dogs and wildlife simply don't mix," he said.

"We encourage people to enjoy walking their dogs but ask that they comply if the area, such as Lake Daylesford, is designated as an on-leash area."

Among the varied birdlife, Lake Daylesford is also home to native animals including echidnas and reptiles along with domestic ducks and geese.

Mr Wright said the patrols would be carried out randomly.

"So far the patrols have revealed that most people are doing the right thing, which is very encouraging," he said.
