CRESWICK teenager Jess van Rossum is well and truly on the mend after a major cancer scare.
The Starlight Foundation has given the 18-year-old a $5000 home entertainment system following her battle with a tumour in her spine.
The cancer has disappeared, although regular check-ups keeps her from feeling reassured of guaranteed health.
She plans to return to school in 2008 to complete her Victorian Certificate of Education.
She was first diagnosed in September 2006. Since then Creswick and district people have provided financial and emotional support.
A recent fundraising trivia night organised by a friend raised almost $10,000.
"I have had really strong support from the community, it's been great and it has made it so much easier," she said.
Jess said her fight with cancer has taught her to appreciate life.
"I now know you can't take stuff for granted and I'm just looking forward to getting on with my life," she said.
"The future's looking bright, but I get really scared every three months when I'm due for a check-up."
Father, William praised the Starlight Foundation for providing the gifts.
"Something like this is really good for Jess. She's grown up enormously in the past year," Mr van Rossum said.
Since 1988, the Starlight Children's Foundation has brightened the lives of seriously ill children and hospitalised children, and their families, by delivering innovative programs that restore the fun, laughter and joy that serious
illness takes away.
