MORE than 1200 residents have thrown their support behind a campaign to build a multi-purpose heated indoor pool at Daylesford.
A petition asking council to undertake a feasibility study of an aquatic facility has collected 1250 signatures.
Hepburn Springs resident David Sim, a member of the group behind the petition, said it had received "overwhelming support".
"I think it signals to council there's a real community demand for a facility like this," he said.
"There's a community demand for swimming facilities that could be used all year round.
"There's been a group of residents, particularly older residents, that essentially get tired of waiting.
"They were looking at the Bathhouse to fill a gap. There's been some disappointment with that."
Mr Sim said an indoor aquatic centre would be suitable for recreational users as well as hydrotherapy, rehabilitation and learn-to-swim programs.
He said Daylesford Swimming Pool was inadequate to service the needs of the community as it was only open for three months of the year.
"It's filling a gap in recreational needs, health and fitness and much-needed recreation for youth," he said.
The petition, drawn up on April 14, was displayed by local businesses and schools in Daylesford, Hepburn Springs and surrounding areas.
Last week organisers counted the signatures so the petition could to be tabled at last night's council meeting.
