Successful autumn for shire's traders

17 Apr, 2007 10:43 AM
TRADERS have experienced a successful autumn holiday period as thousands of people visited Daylesford and surrounds.

The holiday period, which included Easter, is considered the shire's busiest time of year and, according to local traders, it lived up to it.

Bookings were full at Daylesford's accommodation booking services over the Easter weekend.

Peppers Springs Retreat general manager Roland Schibig said the complex's accommodation reflected last year's figures and was "pretty full".

He said the complex's spas and restaurant had also been busy.

"The majority of our guests are from Melbourne," Mr Schibig said.

"They come here because it's a beautiful place."

The Mill Markets in Daylesford attracted more people than manager Angus Carr expected.

He said 830 people walked in the doors on Good Friday, 1100 on Easter Saturday, 1200 on Easter Sunday and 1300 on Easter Monday.

Mr Carr said last week was also busy with between 450 and 500 people enjoying the market.

"There have been heaps of people here," he said.

"They have been buying and spending hours enjoying us in Daylesford."

Mr Carr said visitor numbers to The Mill Markets proved that people had opted to come to Daylesford instead of the beach, considering the good weather.

The Grande Hotel in Hepburn Springs was also a busy attraction.

Publicity and marketing manager Beverly Risstrom said there were busy patches.

"We had tourists and locals," she said.

"It's been lovely to have people appreciate another venue. They were delighted to be able to walk through an old building again."

The Clayfire Gallery in Daylesford was extremely busy, owner Mark Reid said.

"There has been lots of tourists. It's been busier than last year," he said.

"The town has been busy."

Mr Reid said the weather had helped.

"It's the last break before winter," he said.

Tourist figures from Daylesford's Visitor Information Centre will be released at the end of the month.
