BUILDING of the University of Melbourne's new recreational and sporting facilities at the Creswick campus is underway.
The second stage of the Creswick project, consisting of a new purpose built gymnasium and general purpose room, went to tender in March.
It is due for completion in December.
The first stage of the project went to tender in June last year and the building was completed by October.
It included a complete refurbishment of existing buildings to create new student recreation facilities.
Funding for the projects, $1.71 million, is from the Federal Government's Voluntary Student Unionism Transition Fund for universities to provide new or improved services for students and their local communities.
Department of Forest and Ecosystem Science acting head professor Nigel Stork said the new multi-purpose recreational space and a new gymnasium would enable the development of high quality student recreation facilities "to match the world-class research laboratories and teaching
spaces available at Creswick".
