THE SPIRIT of the 2006 Commonwealth Games is gaining momentum in Hepburn Shire.

Council's major Commonwealth Games activity, Warming up for the Games community sports day, will be held at the

Newlyn Recreation Reserve this

Sunday.

The day will feature a variety of

activities and challenges includ

ing a wheelbarrow race, a

gumboot throwing competition

and the particularly novel potato

peeling event.

Each primary school in the shire

has been issued with a brand new

wheelbarrow with the challenge of

decorating it for the special oc

casion.

Council tourism and recreation

manager Geoff Ryan encouraged

everyone to embrace the oppor

tunity and spirit of the games.

"The day will begin at 10.30am

with come and try sessions where

a number of sporting groups from

the region will showcase their

sport, give demonstrations and

provide the opportunity to try it

out and meet club members and

competitors," he said.

He said the day would embrace

the 2006 Commonwealth Games

being staged in Melbourne, and

encouraged more people to be

come involved in physical activity.

"It promises to be a great family

day out and the chance to learn

about the different sports and

activities available in the shire,"

he said.

"It will be particularly useful for

parents who may be encouraging

their children to participate in

physical activity."

Teenagers and music lovers can

enjoy listening to some fabulous bands which will play during

lunch. The shire's mobile skate

park will be available for use.

Buses will ferry residents to and

from the event. Entries will be

taken on the day.
