THE SPIRIT of the 2006 Commonwealth Games is gaining momentum in Hepburn Shire.
Council's major Commonwealth Games activity, Warming up for the Games community sports day, will be held at the
Newlyn Recreation Reserve this
Sunday.
The day will feature a variety of
activities and challenges includ
ing a wheelbarrow race, a
gumboot throwing competition
and the particularly novel potato
peeling event.
Each primary school in the shire
has been issued with a brand new
wheelbarrow with the challenge of
decorating it for the special oc
casion.
Council tourism and recreation
manager Geoff Ryan encouraged
everyone to embrace the oppor
tunity and spirit of the games.
"The day will begin at 10.30am
with come and try sessions where
a number of sporting groups from
the region will showcase their
sport, give demonstrations and
provide the opportunity to try it
out and meet club members and
competitors," he said.
He said the day would embrace
the 2006 Commonwealth Games
being staged in Melbourne, and
encouraged more people to be
come involved in physical activity.
"It promises to be a great family
day out and the chance to learn
about the different sports and
activities available in the shire,"
he said.
"It will be particularly useful for
parents who may be encouraging
their children to participate in
physical activity."
Teenagers and music lovers can
enjoy listening to some fabulous bands which will play during
lunch. The shire's mobile skate
park will be available for use.
Buses will ferry residents to and
from the event. Entries will be
taken on the day.
