Sounds like Glenlyon

07 Feb, 2006 12:04 PM
GLENLYON will turn up the volume this weekend at its first ever world music festival.

Family friendly Glenfest promises to give visitors an exciting opportunity to listen to diverse music as well as an eclectic mix of attractions for people of all ages and interests.

Focusing on environmental sustainability, Glenfest will provide workshops, including strawbale construction, an EcoV alternative energy display and a presentation on new-age bicycles and wind power.

Other attractions include local produce, steam timber bending, belly dancing, arts and crafts, massages and tarot readings.

One of Australia's finest blues groups, Geoff Achison and the Souldiggers, will headline the music along with a variety of local and national talent.

Children will be amused at the jumping castle, goat chariot rides, circus skills and face painting.

Master of ceremonies for Glenfest is the founder of The Independent Musos Network, Anita D.

Glenfest committee member James Browne said the Glenlyon Recreation Reserve was a perfect location for the festival.

"There is nothing like this in the area," he said.

"We hope to attract at least 500 people."

Committee member and musician Garry Eyles said it had always been a dream of his to hold a major festival at Glenlyon.

"I hope to make it a yearly event and continue to develop it," he said.

"It will have good live performances but it won't be just a musical event."

Anita D said Glenfest could follow along the lines of the Meredith music festival and The Falls festival in Lorne, or a "polished hippy" festival.

"It will create an environmental awareness," she said.

Mr Eyles said the festival would attract people from central Victoria and Melbourne, as well as locals.

"The highlight of the day will be the unknown bands and the independent bands," he said.

"There are some really good bands out there."

Glenfest challenges people to take a day out and visit the sleepy hamlet of Glenlyon on Saturday, February 11 from 11am.

Glenfest will be held at the Glenlyon Recreation Reserve, Dysart Rd.

A courtesy bus will leave Daylesford's Music Aviva on the hour from 11am.

Early-bird tickets are: concession $10; adult $15; and family $40 (two adults, two children); or tickets on the day will cost $15, $20 and $45 respectively.
