Shire's pre-schools pushed to limit

21 Nov, 2006 12:47 PM
POSITIONS at the many pre-schools in the shire are filling fast and some only have room on a waiting list.

Daylesford Pre-school has had to adopt a rotation system to cater for the influx of children wanting to attend its program next year.

Just two years ago, the centre was struggling because there were only 18 children enrolled.

Two children are on a waiting list at the Trentham Kindergarten, which is at full capacity with 21 children.

President Sue Bruton said 12 more children than last year had enrolled at the Clunes and District Pre-school, bringing the number up to 23.

Creswick and District Pre-school and Hepburn Kindergarten are the only pre-schools with vacancies.

The council's manager of community services Martin Walmsley said enrolments for next year were consistent with previous years but fluctuated between areas because of ages of children (birthrate and where the four-year-old

population occurs) in each location.

"Between Hepburn Springs and Daylesford they tend to fluctuate as parents have the choice of other pre-school services," he said.

"For example in 2004 we had low enrolment in Daylesford, 2005 low at Hepburn Springs, 2006 low in Clunes, but overall the enrolments are consistent and numbers are high."

KINDER CAPACITY: Hepburn Kindergarten is one of the few pre-schools with low enrolment numbers, despite others in the shire experiencing an influx of children enrolments.
