SES training complete for first group in Hepburn Shire

28 Apr, 2009 11:56 AM
THE Hepburn Shire is in safe hands with four State Emergency Service volunteers completing their general rescue qualifications two weeks ago.

SES controller David Wellings said the four men were the first of a unit of 20 volunteers to complete the qualifications after nine months of intensive training.

The accreditation means the volunteers can give immediate assistance during emergency situations such as storm and flood damage, road accidents, casualty handling and search and rescue.

Mr Wellings said the unit was very close to being fully operational, particularly with the completion of a new state-of the-art storm trailer expected in the next couple of weeks.

"I think our response time has been drastically reduced," he said.

"In cases of storms or flooding we'd be able to take control of these situations in conjunction with the community emergency services.

"We're looking forward to establishing a strong community relationship and complementing emergency services within the shire."

Daylesford previously had to wait for SES volunteers to arrive from areas such as Bacchus Marsh, Ballarat and Castlemaine, Mr Wellings said.

SES deputy controller Joel Hines said it was great to have the accreditation behind them and be operational.

"We'll be ready to support the Hepburn Shire for the wet, windy season ahead," Mr Hines said.

Mr Wellings said the building of a new headquarters, which would include the Daylesford ambulance service, would be completed by the end of October.
