THE service and sacrifice of Australian troops who fought in Vietnam will be remembered this Friday, 40 years after the end of the conflict.
The anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan will be commemorated in Daylesford by a street march and a service at the cenotaph.
Daylesford RSL president Bill Wallace said the service would recognise what the troops didn't get when they returned.
He said families, school children and cadets would be at the service.
"All veterans are welcome to join in the march and lunch, and all other ex-servicemen and returned veterans," he said.
Pam Werner, who was a nurse at the battle, said she was proud to be part of the Australian forces and serving in Vietnam.
The Federal Government committed $810 to the Daylesford RSL to help veterans commemorate the 40th anniversary.
The street march will be held in Vincent St at 11am, followed by a service at the cenotaph and a light lunch at the RSL.
The Daylesford RSL has a welfare and pension officer to assist veterans with welfare and veteran affairs. For assistance contact 5348 3724.
There is also a 24-hour Vietnam Veterans Counselling Service offering support and referral for all veterans, their children and spouses. Contact 1800 011 046.
