Scottish culture greets visitors

05 Dec, 2006 12:19 PM
SCOTTISH culture greeted visitors to Daylesford last Saturday for the 55th Daylesford Highland Gathering.

Held at Victoria Park, the highland gathering featured highland dancing, solo drumming competitions and massed highland bands.

Performers, bands and highland dancing groups participated in the events.

There was a twilight street parade in Vincent St followed by a ceilidh.

Daylesford Highland Gathering Committee vice-president Keith Pyers said a very good crowd had attended on the day.

"The grounds looked lovely," he said.

A band from Bellinger River in Northern NSW won their section.

University of Ballarat vice-chancellor Professor David Battersby opened the event, while Senator Michael Ronaldson was the chieftain.

Mr Pyers said there were Scottish bands and clans and lots of stalls selling Scottish memorabilia.

He said three life memberships were presented at lunch-time with the help of Senator Ronaldson.

Mr Pyers thanked the Daylesford Primary School, Girl Guides and the Daylesford Football Netball Club.

"We appreciate their help," he said.
