Safety boost for regional roads

17 Jul, 2007 11:06 AM
IN A significant boost for road safety in the goldfields region, $2 million has been allocated for road safety improvements along the Ballarat-Maryborough Rd.

Minister for Agriculture and Member for Ripon Joe Helper, who announced the funds, said the money would be used for a variety of improvements between Miners Rest and Talbot, including shoulder sealing, wire rope safety

barriers, guardrails and linemarking.

"Unfortunately, over the past five years there have been 17 run off road crashes along this stretch of road, including one fatality," Mr Helper said

Run off road crashes represent a substantial proportion of the road toll, particularly in the central Victoria area.

"They are the silent killers on our regional roads, with 48 per cent of fatal, and 46 per cent of serious injury crashes involving vehicles coming off the road in the past five years."

The project is part of the Bracks Government's $170 million arrive alive! Safer Roads Program.

The TAC funded program targets locations across Victoria with an emphasis on rural and outer metropolitan areas where there is a disproportionately higher rate of serious injury and fatality crashes.
