AN AGRICULTURAL advisory committee formed by the Hepburn Shire Council is believed to be the first in Victoria.
The council has appointed five community representatives to its new committee. As well, it includes two Victorian Farmers Federation representatives and shire councillor and potato farmer David Smith.
Mayor Tim Hayes said the committee would provide advice on transport, pricing, climate change, sustainability, pollution, water, drought, potatoes, farmgate production and genetically modified crops.
"Council may then choose to advocate on the industry's behalf, facilitate appropriate industry development, or address industry needs in the development of policy and strategic plans," he said.
"Establishment of this committee is expected to enhance and strengthen council's ability to consider issues which affect the agriculture industry and the community."
Community representatives include Damian Leonard, David Holmgren, Joy Durston, Elizabeth Hak and Norm Suckling.
Shire chief executive officer Kaylene Conrick said the committee members had extensive farming experience, knowledge of permaculture and farmgate production.
"Each of the members is broadly involved in the community and is representative of a range of community views on agriculture," she said.
