Respite offer for fire survivors

27 Feb, 2009 10:07 AM
THE community has rallied together to offer bushfire victims respite accommodation.

Old Hepburn hotel co-owner Jason Dooley is co-ordinating various accommodation houses and other businesses that are willing to give their services to help fire victims referred to him by the Department of Human Services.

"There has been a huge response from accommodation places around town with 52 properties on the list already," Mr Dooley said.

Businesses are also offering dinner and breakfast vouchers and therapeutic services.

Three friends from fire-affected areas in Strathewan and St Andrews arrived in Daylesford last Tuesday and were given free accommodation at Daylesford Pendower House.

Strathewan resident Hazel Fox said that she and her friends had felt a strong need to be together for support and that was why they had come to Daylesford.

St Andrews CFA member Angela Bilston said the fire had come within two kilometres of their home but the wind had changed and saved the town.

Another St Andrews resident Jo Chappel said her husband had been on the roof and saw the fire coming.

"There were explosions in the air and he said the blood drained out of his body," she said.

"We stayed to fight. I don't know why we didn't evacuate but we just went into automatic action.

"The fire came within 750 metres of our home and turned because the wind changed. We didn't sleep for four nights after that (because we were) keeping watch."

Ms Fox said people in Daylesford had been fantastic and they would spread the word back home that support was available.

"It's been great for us to have some time here together and we're grateful for what people have done for us," Ms Fox said.
