Residents fed up with road base

24 Jul, 2007 10:37 AM
FURIOUS Clunes residents say they are sick and tired of asking for their road to be fixed.

Criterion Crt residents have lodged a petition with Hepburn Shire Council to repair their street, which they say has a poor road base and needs to be re-layed.

The petition has 22 names of residents and other road users.

John Young, who lives at the end of the court, said the road's poor condition posed a danger to pedestrians and motorists.

"Someone has recently lost their footing in one of the potholes during the night," he said.

Another resident, Margaret Freeman, said the road was in a shocking condition and street lighting was poor.

Mrs Freeman also said the road was damaging residents' cars.

Mrs Freeman said residents had complained about the road for years.

"We've been happy with the way council has responded to our previous complaints, but it's now clear to see the road can't be just patched up anymore. There is no road base, it's just mush," Mrs Freeman said.

Council infrastructure director Rod Conway said the council would like to re-construct a number of roads in the shire, but didn't have sufficient funds.

He said available funding was allocated on a priority basis.

"Council will consider this request for re-construction of the road as well as the issue of funding and should determine at its August o9rdinary meeting as to what action it will take," he said.

"Routine inspections are carried out however, as the petition has been received, a further detailed inspection will be carried out and will form part of the report to council's August ordinary Meeting," Mr Conway said.
