Rain no reason for complacency

17 May, 2007 12:17 AM
CONSERVE water, the drought is not over - that's the message from Hepburn Shire mayor David Smith who is concerned visitors and residents may become complacent after the last fortnight's rain.

Cr Smith said for farmers, the worst was yet to come even if rain continues.

"Regardless of rain, it is now too late for worthwhile winter feed to grow and farmers face a difficult winter trying to feed hungry stock.

"It will take many periods of heavy rain for the drought to be broken but it is easy for people to become complacent once the ground is wet and they see a bit of green grass," he said.

Cr Smith said catchments had not benefited from the rain so far and much more was needed to make any difference to water levels.

"All residents, and visitors coming to stay in the shire need to remember to conserve every drop. We are in serious crisis if decent ongoing rainfall doesn't arrive.

"While the shire has many lovely lakes and visitors love to come here to 'escape' the feeling of the big dry, it is important that everyone use as little water as possible."

He also said while water restrictions were in place authorities were not able to control water in each house, building or business.

"This relies on the honesty from everyone, residents, business owners and visitors.

"Tourism operators are advised to remind visitors of the seriousness of the situation," Cr Smith said.

The Hepburn Shire Council has made available comprehensive information relating to all aspects of drought on its website www.hepburnshire.com.au
