CLUNES residents will hold a public meeting push for a passenger train station for the town.
Resident John Sayers put the call out earlier this month for interested people to join forces for the station as part of the upgrade of the Maryborough to Ballarat line.
Mr Sayers said "virtually everyone" in Clunes wanted passenger trains to return to the region.
"Everyone wants the trains to stop at Clunes," he said.
"And while it's a bit of a pipe dream at the moment, we are trying."
The public meeting will be held at the Clunes Town Hall on Wednesday, October 7 from 8pm and should be "packed", according to Mr Sayers.
"We have also invited politicians, not so they can take over the issue, but so they know what we want and can take that back to their governments," he said.
"And while the State Government is to be thoroughly congratulated on its initiatives in re-establishing the train, their decision not to stop in Clunes is a letdown.
"Perhaps Mr Brumby is not aware of the `oohs and aaahs' going on over the revamped train line."
Mr Sayers said the meeting was being advertised via mail drops in the town and over the radio waves.
"At the meeting itself we will have some motions ready to pass and will also establish a steering committee."
As part of the line's upgrade, a park-and-ride train station will be built at Creswick next year.
