Pool's future plan awaits Heritage Victoria approval

20 Feb, 2007 09:45 AM
PLANS to restore the Hepburn Pool's natural beauty are awaiting approval from Heritage Victoria.

The plans include safety works that were recommended in a report prepared by former ABC broadcaster and community consultant Lynne Haultain in August.

Among the report's recommendations were improving the walking track from the car park to the viewing area, child-safe gates on the track from the Hepburn Springs bathhouse, installing guard rails on the steps, additional

or repositioned signs and replacement of the walk bridge.

Holcombe ward councillor Bill McClenaghan said he was confident the plans would be approved soon.

He said $100,000 from the Department of Sustainability and Environment would be spent before the end of this financial year on safety works.

"Things are going ahead well," he said.

A Heritage Victoria spokeswoman said they had received the planning permit and an announcement would be made by the end of March.

A ban on swimming at the heritage-listed pool remains with the priority resting around making the pool safer.

Cr McClenaghan said it was unknown when the pool would be cleaned out.

"The North Central Catchment Authority comes into that. During the fire season we can't drain the pool," he said.

"The priority works are around the pool and getting it safe which is what we agreed to with the government.

"What happens with the pool remains to be seen," he said.

The council will source a contractor to carry out the safety works once the plans are approved.

The Hepburn Pool Advisory Committee was appointed in October to complete initial works at the pool.

Public liability insurance was reinstated at the pool in August.

It had been uninsured since 1996 after 10 years of meetings failed to resolve public safety issues.
