Plea issued to save diving tower

13 Feb, 2007 11:00 AM
HEPBURN Shire Council is urging the community to look after Calembeen Park in an effort to retain the historic diving tower.

A fence was installed around the tower earlier this month so that supervised use could be provided.

Council's tourism and recreation manager Geoff Ryan said some park users were not respecting the reasons why the fence was installed.

"We hope this can be curbed so as not to jeopardise the chances of retaining the tower," Mr Ryan said.

"It would be a shame if the behaviour of a few individuals costs the rest of the community. If use of the tower cannot be controlled we may be advised to remove the tower completely.

"It is not the intention of council to remove public facilities but to provide them in a controlled environment, safe and enjoyable to all the community in which we can meet public liability and insurance commitments.

"Should an accident occur, an insurance claim against the council could cost ratepayers millions of dollars," Mr Ryan said.

Creswick ward councillor Janine Booth encouraged the community to work together to preserve Calembeen Park.

"Responsible use of Calembeen Park is the best chance we have of retaining the tower for everyone to enjoy.

"Since the lifesavers have been supervising the diving tower, the number of people enjoying and using the facilities at Calembeen Park has increased considerably.

"It is a fantastic location and it is great to see it being used and enjoyed."

About 140 people attended a family fun day at the park hosted by the YMCA earlier this month.

Friends of Calembeen Park vice-president John Porter said the day was a success.
