Pipecon awarded for Cosgrave line

06 Sep, 2006 01:43 PM
BUILDERS of an underground pipeline between the Cosgrave and White Swan reservoir have won an environmental excellence award.

Pipecon from Ballarat was the Victorian winner in the CASE Earth Awards for its practice and innovation in the field of environmental management of civil construction and its related projects.

Pipecon worked with Central Highlands water and constructed a 10km PVC pipeline from the Cosgrave Reservoir to top up the White Swan water supply.

The main challenge of the project was the environmentally sensitive nature of the works, much of which is close to significant vegetation on the outskirts of the Creswick State Forest and important water catchments.

Pipecon managing director Andrew Mahar said many people in Creswick did not know the works were taking place. He said the secret behind the award was the way the pipeline was constructed in the environment.

"Nothing was left on site after a day's work. We cleaned up everything," Mr Mahar said.

Pipecon implemented strict environmental management controls including erosion and sediment control devices and wash down stations, and made use of small, low impact equipment.

Significant levels of environmental training were provided to all project staff to underpin procedures.

Mr Mahar said he was very excited about the company's award. He said he was very pleased with the work of the 10 employees.

"It was their work that made this award possible," he said.

Central Highlands Water acting chief executive officer Tony Wright congratulated Pipecon on its award.

"We congratulate Pipecon and commend them for their efforts in completing the works in an environmentally sound way," he said.

The project, in the category one section for up to $5 million, was finished within three-and-a-half months, four weeks ahead of schedule and under budget. The landscape showed little evidence of pipeline footprint which was testimony to the strong

environmental management of the project.

Pipecon will now be in the running for national honours to be announced on November 11 in Tasmania.
