Petrol prices to rise for Easter

19 Mar, 2008 10:47 AM
HEPBURN Shire tourism operators gearing up for Easter holidays may get a rude shock as petrol prices hit record highs.

The world price of crude oil closed at a record $US107.90 a barrel in New York last week, which could push pump prices over $1.50 a litre across Victoria, including Melbourne.

Daylesford Accommodation Booking Service has recorded a decline in the lead up to Easter.

Operator Patrick Baird said interest rate rises and hot weather had led to a decline in business this year, but it was petrol that was draining the tourist dollar.

"I think another factor is the way Easter has fallen so close to the Labour Day long weekend this year," Mr Baird said.

A National Australia Bank business survey said Australian petrol prices had risen for the third consecutive week.

The average household was paying just under $195 a month on petrol, up by more than $25 a month over the past year.

Mr Baird said the region's proximity to Melbourne was a bonus.

"People's holiday planing has changed. They are making more quick decisions that see them pack their car and head off for the weekend.

"I think being so close to Melbourne helps this region, people can come from the city and go home again on one tank of petrol. Other places like Apollo Bay and Beechworth would really feel the effects," he said.

He said despite this year "being slower", accommodation would fill as the week progressed.

"There's no assurances, but I think we be okay in the end," Mr Baird said.
