Paul Johnston to try for Western Region seat

29 Sep, 2009 11:13 AM
REAL estate agent Paul Johnston has put his hand up for Liberal Party pre-selection in next year's state election.

Mr Johnston, who ran but failed to secure a seat in 2006 and has been chairman of the Western Victoria REC for the past three years, is hoping to represent the Western Region seat.

Mr Johnston said he believed it was time to build on his experience in the region.

"My experience in property, small business, accounting and tourism has been increasingly developed for over 15 years," he said.

"I believe that I have the energy and commitment needed to ensure this region is well represented if I am successfully pre-selected."

Other candidates include incumbent David Koch, former police sergeant, anti-corruption campaigner and Wannon aspirant Simon Illingworth, former Victorian Farmers Federation president Simon Ramsay and Colac businessman Richard Riordan.

Another incumbent, John Vogels, is retiring.

At Ballarat, where nominations will not close until the end of the year, former Liberal candidate for Ripon, Vic Dunn, said he would renominate for the seat.

"We ran a pretty good race last time and the same issues (including transport and safety) are relevant this time," he said.

It is believed Craig Coltman is considering nomination for Ballarat West. His brother, Steven, was Ballarat's Liberal Party candidate for the 2007 federal election.

Former Liberal Candidate for Ballarat West, Shane Brennan is also considering nominating.

"You've got to weigh up all the pros and cons associated with it," he said.

Meanwhile, Ballarat City councillor and former Liberal and Nationals candidate Samantha McIntosh has ruled out running again.

I've been elected to the City of Ballarat council and that's where my commitment lies," she said.
