CANCER patient Julieta Weiss has been overwhelmed by the support shown to her after strangers read about her life-threatening battle with breast cancer in The Advocate last week.
Readers were told of the Weiss family's need to raise up to $70,000 for Herceptin, a drug that reduces the re-occurrence of the cancer.
Since then the Weiss family has been bombarded with phone calls and donations.
One couple donated a substantial amount of money after tears swelled in their eyes when reading about Mrs Weiss' battle.
A Creswick resident also contacted the family and offered his support.
Mrs Weiss' husband, George, couldn't hold back his tears after the enormous response.
"We had no idea what it was going to be like," he said.
The Weiss' children were also overcome with emotion on hearing about the response.
Mrs Weiss said she had enough donations to organise a raffle.
She also received more than 140 signatures at a function at The Palais last week
"It's very encouraging," Mrs Weiss said.
"People who you would least expect are helping. It's unbelievable."
Anyone willing to help with petitions should contact the family on 5348 1506. Donations can be made at the Commonwealth Bank.
