NEWLYN'S roundabout has become a festering weed pit so resident Dick Campbell is calling for help to restore it into an attractive focal point of the community.
His plea comes after the council withdrew $9000 of funding it had earmarked for an upgrade of the roundabout, in response to calls from the community to trim its 2010/11 Budget.
Mr Campbell said although he understood that money was tight, he hoped there was still some way to make the project happen.
"At the moment we've got an unsightly weed bed. Twice a year somebody nukes it and that's it," he said.
"Living in the area, the roundabout is actually a large focal part of Newlyn.
"Everyone gives directions through the roundabout and everybody drives through it."
Mr Campbell, a member of the Newlyn/ Rocklyn Community Planning Group, said beautifying the roundabout had been identified as a priority by the group, who formed last year with the assistance of council.
Because of maintenance and height regulations for the site, which is located in an 80 kilometre zone, they decided the most suitable option was to fill the roundabout with coloured concrete or asphalt.
"We got a rough estimate from a concreter which was around the $18,000 mark," Mr Campbell said.
"We approached council and it earmarked $9000.
"In the interim period council has decided to retract that $9000, which left us pretty empty."
Mr Campbell said the planning group would have another meeting to discuss its options and hopefully, it was not the end of the matter. "The council hasn't said no completely.
"I'm keen to revisit the quote and find out from VicRoads exactly what we can or can't do," he said.
